Career prospects in Travel Industry in India
- The travel Industry in India has established itself as a key driver of economic growth. It has made the Government aware of its potential in providing employment to large numbers of Indians. The travel industry is also a vital source of foreign exchange and enhances the earning capability of the local communities that witness a surge in tourism.
The number of foreign tourists to India has increased significantly in the past decade. What is even more noteworthy is the amount of Indians traveling within India. There has been an unprecedented rise in the domestic travel industry in India. In fact, according to recent estimates as much as 30 million Indians indulge in domestic travel every year. One of the reasons for this is the burgeoning youth population of India who have a different perception about what constitutes a healthy work-life balance.
Unlike the older generation who had a more conservative outlook to life, the younger generation believes in working hard and partying equally hard. This has led to a great demand for leisure services among which the travel industry in India tops the list. What makes the scenario even better is the diverse travel destinations that India presents to the traveller in search for novelty, peace and excitement. The cultural and historical treasures of this country are unparalleled. When this is taken in conjunction with its abundant hill stations, beaches and wildlife, there is a veritable treasure trove to choose from.
Understanding the true potential of India as a tourism destination and the huge revenue that it can generate, the Ministry of Tourism began actively promoting the Indian brand through its ‘Incredible India’ campaign. This seeks to promote and create awareness of exotic destinations through various social media. Attempts are being made to project known places in a new and attractive light so that the “travel industry in India” can reach unprecedented heights.
Prime Minister NarendraModi has provided a huge boost to tourism and the economy by facilitating visa-on-arrival to many countries during his first year in power. This needs to be extended to other countries as well for the growth of the travel sector to India. Tax rules need to be tweaked to favour international tourists along with ensuring their safety when they do travel to India. Dissimilar road tax structures across different states are another impediment for the travel industry in India. This needs to be addressed along with equipping the vast manpower in India with the requisite skills to meet the growing demands of tourism. Infrastructure needs to be given a serious face-lift and hygiene standards at tourist locations have to undergo a vast improvement.
Along with the Government, we – the citizens, also need to be actively involved in keeping public places clean and adopting a welcoming attitude to international and domestic tourists. This will provide a huge boost to the tourism sector. A growing trend that has completely changed the face of travel and helped enormously in its growth is the online travel industry in India.
